Why is the New Zealand government trying to deny our                  Judeo-Christian  heritage? ►Sunday July 8th 2007

In the sphere of professional sales it is generally considered wise to avoid discussing politics and religion with customers. Such topics tend to be emotionally charged but, at NZ Gold, we feel both have critical relevance to this website. Of recent interest to us was the controversy that followed the Prime Minister's comments - made at the 'Third Asia-Pacific Regional Interfaith Dialogue'.

Helen Clarke's distancing of New Zealand, from the Judeo-Christian heritage that we would have thought so important to the nation's history, caused us to reflect. At first we were a little flabbergasted! Could it really be possible that a New Zealand politician had offered an original idea - a fresh way of looking at things? Then we reflected on the Prime Minister's words, reported in The New Zealand Herald on Thursday November 16th 2006 (Clark discusses formal links with Europe - "there's an appreciation in Brussels that New Zealand is the most like-minded country on earth to the EU"). How interesting, because a similar controversy previously erupted within the European Union over the proposed 'European constitution' and its distancing of that continent from its spiritual past. Of course at NZ Gold we were delighted to see the constitution - a document we regard as a repellant affront to national sovereignty - humiliatingly rejected by Denmark, Ireland, and then France! (Although don't be fooled, it will be back, again, and again, and again, until the 'Eurofacists' get their way!) Within all this the French situation is particularly relevant. For France has been amongst then most staunch supporters of a secular conception of the European project. Yet it is arguably - and ironically - the major nation most likely to emerge as Western Europe's first 'defacto Muslim state'.

So our thinking develops, tempered by the many years we have spent both in England and New Zealand watching the vain attempts to create a European susperstate. Indeed, vanity and politics seem inseparable and we suspect herein is the first reason for attempting to expunge the Judeo-Christian lexicon from New Zealand and Europe. Put simply, Christianity is a competitor to the doctrine of state omnipotence and the deification of laughably conceited national leaders. Surely, no objective contemporary observer of Europe (or New Zealand) could fail to notice that the 'state' is ever more intrusive, ever more arrogant, and ever more greedy in its assertion of infallibility. Like a long dominant player in a marketplace, the Judeo-Christian tradition is in the sights of the new 'European corporate order' because it places God upon the throne that the political elite believe should now be occupied by the state. Given that we are told "New Zealand is the most like-minded country on earth to the EU" it should hardly surprise us if we dutifully follow Europe's illusory path to secularism. We deliberately employ the term illusory because - as the robustly secularist French appear to be discovering (with their British and other neighbours close behind) - when Judeo-Christian tradition is abandoned, in countries that have been subject to large scale Muslim immigration, what seems to emerge is a bizarre hybrid of advancing urban Islam and rampant consumerism. Forgive us, but we suspect the notion that genuinely secular states can emerge in Europe is incongruous with the reality of dramatically changing demographics!

The burgeoning European Islamic issue interests us greatly, because it does seem to have provided politicians with a convenient pretext for the erosion of historic personal freedoms. This must lead us to wonder if the denial of Judeo-Christian tradition doesn't offer important complimentary benefits for the new 'European corporate order' that go beyond merely asserting the effective divinity of the state. We thus perceive what might be termed 'tactical secularism' - a phenomenon in which Judeo-Christian tradition is increasingly marginalised (because it is seen as a dangerous competitor) whilst strident Islam is 'defacto' welcomed because it provides a useful excuse to extinguish troublesome civil liberties. No country more magnificently demonstrates this phenomenon than Britain - "the mother of the free" and a place that now houses the most watched and monitored population in human history. What is the justification used by politicians for the exponential loss of our liberties? - the war on Islamic terror!

It would offer some comfort to assert that the above situation has simply come about due to unfolding events that no one could have foreseen - and to which our courageous and enlightened leaders have reacted with great prescience. At NZ Gold we would prefer this version of events but our enquiring minds cause us to wonder and we take time to remind ourselves of the words of America's wartime president Franklin D. Roosevelt: "in politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens you can bet it was planned that way". It is also worth remembering that Britain's 'high priest' of political controversy Enoch Powell, in a speech to the Stretford young Conservatives in January1977, noted that: "all round the world in various forms the same formula for rending societies apart is being prepared and applied, by ignorance or design, and there are those who are determined to see to it that Britain shall no longer be able to escape". Thus we find ourselves sympathetic to the view that a bi-faceted phenomenon is unfolding. We fear it is one in which the state assumes omnipotence, whilst the Judeo-Christian tradition, that might cause us to at least question such historically demonstrable nonsense, is cynically expunged. Simultaneously, religious extremism is tacitly encouraged because it provides the pretext for progressively expunging real democracy and freedoms.

Yet why would politicians want to extinguish historic liberties. At NZ Gold our view is that such freedoms pose both impediments and threats to the creation of pure 'corporate states'. States in which the ruling elite become progressively immune from effective scrutiny and electoral sanction. There is nothing new in this. In AD60 Suetonius Paulinus, Emperor Nero's Imperial Governor in Britain, saw a similar threat from that nation's historic religion, Druidism. In consequence appalling slaughter was instigated at Ynys Mon, the modern day island of Anglesey and spiritual home of the Druids. It was a place which the Roman historian Tacitus described as "feeding the native resistance". Of course, Rome's elimination of the religious nuisance was immeasurable more aggressive than anything that has happened in present day Europe and New Zealand thus far. Yet we suspect the underling 'principles' remain the same. The 'corporate elite' require a particular form of society, irrespective of the wishes of the ordinary citizen. Granted, the Judeo-Christian tradition may not hold much contemporary appeal for many Kiwis, Poms, and Europeans! Irrespective, we would strongly caution that the secularist ignores - and ignores at his peril - the way in which the Judeo-Christian tradition acts as a bulwark against the intent of those who are determined to enslave us. At NZ Gold it does not suprise us that Britain's wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, when rallying parliament and the nation on June 18th 1940 after "the colossal military disaster" that had just occurred in France spoke of the coming battle for "the survival of Christian civilization" noting that "upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions..." For all his faults, Churchill's genius lay in a unique ability to connect his countrymen to their past - at that moment of supreme national crisis. The ghosts of that past, to which Churchill called with such artistry, were inextricably linked with a Christian heritage - however inconvenient that might be for contemporary politicians.

So where does all of this leave our readers? Well, at NZ Gold we can only offer our own thoughts and suggestions. We believe that the steady extinguishing of Judeo-Christian tradition is part of the topography that unfolds along Friedrich Hayek's 'Road to Serfdom'. It is a phenomenon that joins monetary debasement, political correctness, the progressive abandonment of the rule of law, the undermining of historic institutions, environmental degradation, substance abuse and an increasingly amoral foreign policy as we sleepwalk towards the politician's Shangri-La dictatorship!

In her address to the Asia-Pacific Regional Interfaith Dialogue on Tuesday 29th May 2007 the Prime Minister spoke of a "broadly based statement on religious diversity in New Zealand". Apparently this now developed statement "offers a framework within which issues of religion can be discussed by faith communities and the wider public". At NZ Gold we would suggest that this all sounds rather splendid but, as is so often the case with pious statements from transient politicians, it ignores the huge implications of what is being proposed. Indeed, amongst other things, we note that the statement "emphasises":

-"that all faiths and beliefs should be treated equally before the law"                                                -"the right to safety and security for those of all faiths and belief"                                                    -"the need for our public services and workplaces to accommodate diverse beliefs and practices"

On the surface the above sentiments seem eminently reasonable! Yet we would suggest that Europe's experience (the real one - not the cynically choreographed illusion broadcast from the ruling elite's ivory towers) should cause New Zealanders to question if dutifully 'going where the EU has already gone' is wise? How, we enquire, is New Zealand going to treat all faiths and beliefs equally before the law? Will this mean formally introducing a parallel Sharia (Islamic) legal system. Would such an impost apply only to Muslims or, in the future, would it also apply to other Kiwis living in Muslim dominated urban areas? Will a British style 'solution' emerge in which the pretence of a ubiquitous rule of nominal Judeo-Christian based law is made - whilst burgeoning Sharia is tacitly accommodated? Will the New Zealand government uphold the right of Muslims and others to repudiate their faith and convert to Christianity - without threats to their safety if they so wish? Will incitement to hatred and violence be dealt with evenly - or will there be one severe rule for the established population and one much more 'accommodating rule' for newcomers whose faiths find greater favour with the ruling elite? In the workplace, will an exacting standard be applied to the established population whilst a lesser standard is applied to those from unfamiliar cultural backgrounds - based on the relative willingness of different communities to both infer and deliver violence? You don't think this happens, well look at Europe - and especially Britain - and then ask yourself why so many 'indigenous' Europeans are packing their bags and fleeing the continent for good!

Towards the conclusion of her address the Prime Minister spoke of the voices of 'moderation and reason'. At NZ Gold we are always keen on moderation and reason but a true commitment to such values requires a willingness to ask the incisive questions - and to confront unpalatable truths that may emerge. We are mindful of the observation, made by of our countryman Enoch Powell, that "the supreme purpose of statesmanship is to guard against preventable evils". In this regard we note that a key modus-operandi of the post-war European ruling elite has been to effectively proscribe debate on issues of profound significance to the peoples whom they purport to serve. Look at Britain! Moderate and reasoned discourse on levels of immigration - that are literally overwhelming the nation - is impossible because the ruling elite has so cynically linked all attempts at measured discussion with racism. At NZ Gold we suggest that the same strategy will be used in New Zealand to try and push debate over the role of Judeo-Christian heritage to the extremes - thereby creating a pretext for our politicians to wheel out the usual clichés about hate and bigotry. At no stage will it be acknowledged that, if we are contemplating going down the profound path of imitating Western Europe, it might just be sensible - for the sakes of all the communities who live in New Zealand - to have an honest and reasoned review first!
