England's Bleak Horizon - Could AD 60 Happen Again?

Sunday March 13th 2011

What can we learn from Queen Boudica's Iceni uprising in AD60?

It was Mark Twain who reminded us that history does not repeat. Yet he also pointed out that it does have a tendency to “rhyme”. For a while we carried the title of this article on our home page banner, whilst we awaited an appropriate moment to reluctantly express our fears - on what might lay ahead for England and her 'indigenous' population. Several things suggest to us that an 'inflection' point is indeed approaching for England. For she continues along the “Road to Serfdom” so presciently foreseen by the great Friedrich von Hayek, when he was writing as a refugee from Nazi Germany at the London School of Economics in 1944. Progress along Hayek’s sombre road has been remorseless during the post-war decades. Yet the sham of the 2010 general election, the associated ‘austerity measures’, and the utterly predictable ‘Euro crisis’, delivers three canvasses on which a dying nation can be painted in acutely sharp relief. For in many respects our worse fears have now been realized. A coalition, between what is laughably referred to as the Conservative Party and that collective of chardonnay socialists who have the cheek to call themselves “Liberal Democrats”.

Mindful of the above, we noted an optimistic Facebook comment from an old friend about “getting our country back” ahead of Gordon Brown’s deserved expulsion from office during 2010. (In case you’ve already forgotten who Brown is he was the chap who sold half of Britain’s gold reserves during the gold bear-market nadir in 1999). Currently (early March 2011) the price of gold in Pounds Sterling is approximately £870 per ounce. Nice one Gordon, your actions cost Britain billions - what do you do for an encore? At www.nzgold.org we felt the inference that, if victorious, Conservative Party leader David Cameron would engage in “getting our country back” was understandable but extremely naïve. Almost inevitably, when confronted with the ‘England hating destructiveness’ of the Blair and Brown years, many were longing for change. Yet we never believed the election would make a scrap of difference to unfolding ruin of our country. Rather, we believed it would be ‘business as usual’ for Britain’s political elite. The formula is simple. First con your way into power, then preside over deliberate ruin, then express "regret" and promise to do better next time its your turn for the treasury benches. Given a few years in opposition the ‘simpletons’ in the electorate will have forgotten your earlier betrayal and a fresh armamentarium of outright lies and ‘economies with the truth’ should see your party back in office. Isn’t this precisely the strategy being attempted by the New Zealand Labour Party as they claim to have turned away from their earlier embrace of "neo-liberalism". Won’t the same strategy be employed by the new British Labour Party leader Ed Miliband? Indeed, is this not precisely what he is doing with his breathtaking hypocrisy over the plight of the middle class? Moreover, note how the attempt is always made to describe earlier follies as “neo-liberalism” or “capitalism”. Yet the Chinese proverb reminds us: “wisdom begins by first calling things by their correct name”. So let’s remind ourselves that the ‘isms’ of the British political establishment and its colonial offshoot in New Zealand are correctly described as 'corporate-cronyism' and 'fascism'. Nowhere in these declining nations do we discern genuine liberalism and capitalism today. Such high ideals decayed long ago, during the early stages of our walk along Hayek's socialist "Road to Serfdom". Thus we spent most of the twentieth century living off the kinetic energy begat of an earlier period - but that economic and cultural momentum is now all but exhausted. That our former prosperity and societal advance is found meeting its Nemesis during the early stages of the twenty first century should not come as a surprise. For like the Prodigal Son we have squandered our inheritance.

England has, of course, been betrayed in craven supplication to the European Union. When considering this totalitarian behemoth our minds travel back to the words of the first European 'heavyweight' to jealously covet what is now known as England. Julius Caesar’s infamous words, “Alea, iacta, est” (“the die is cast”) were uttered as he crossed the Rubicon to confront General Pompey and end the dying vestiges of the Roman Republic. They seem to convey so well the sense of an unstoppable event. At www.nzgold.org we find it difficult not to similarly conclude that 'the die is cast' in terms of England's future, for the nation has advanced so far down Hayek's sombre road that it may well be too late to turn back. All the general election did, in our view, was to confirm that the socialist hegemony of Labour, Liberal-Democrat, and Conservative remains inviolate. Put simply England remains effectively ruled by governance 'of bankers, by bankers, for bankers'. The European Union, we suspect, is really an Anglo-American invention designed to bypass all semblance of representative democracy and to deliver what Sir Oswald Moseley once described as “government of money and money alone”. Hence the frequent bewilderment of our countrymen as they see the EU imposing policies that are progressively destroying the nation's remaining prosperity and social cohesion. They cannot understand why British governments would allow such things. They have forgotten the warning of the nineteenth century statesman Benjamin Disraeli: "For you see, the world is governed by very different personages from what is imagined by those who are not behind the scenes".

As we consider Disraeli's words we must reflect that real European power shifted long ago from Rome and the continent and moved west. We suspect that such political and economic hegemony will not be given up easily by the power elites of London and Wall Street. Thus the EU is, in our opinion, a 'power-elite vehicle' for creating an authoritarian pan-European debt-gulag. Conveniently the Germans, French, and other Europeans can be subtlety blamed for this unfolding disaster that, make no mistake, portends serfdom for England's middle class. Remember, the European Union is the embodiment of authoritarian socialism - a rotting empire reposed on debt. Remember, the people who have enjoyed the lavish fruits of that debt issuance are overwhelmingly the bankers of London and Wall Street and the associated European 'Nomenklatura'. Next time we feel like criticizing our ordinary neighbours from across the English Channel perhaps we should think a little more humbly about who is really behind the ‘Evil Unlimited’ of the European Union. We might have cause to be ashamed.

Our emphasis on England, in this article, is not designed to exclude readers from other parts of the United Kingdom. On the contrary, we discern the prospects for freedom and prosperity in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to be similarly dire going forward. Indeed, wherever the European Union casts it's dark shadow a future of debt enslavement, authoritarianism, and 'corporate humanity' seems inevitable. Within this, we find a profound tragedy in the unfolding plight of Greece. That famous state, that contributed so disproportionately to our ideas for civillised living, now wrecked by the follies of 'easy-money'. Yet England disproportionately fascinates in the context of unfolding events. Why? Because we would argue that a case can be made for the nation having been here before – not in recent times admittedly - but in the events of almost two thousand years ago. Thus, we are compelled to ask whether history is going to rhyme and deliver events on English soil that we suspect few of our countrymen have even begun to contemplate.

Enjoying a civillised breakfast, in the still pleasant county of Hampshire earlier in 2010, conversation turned to the then forthcoming British election and the economy. Something was said by the author about the stupidity of Gordon Brown selling a large part of Britain's gold reserves in 1999. “Ah, but isn’t gold useless came the rejoinder!” To us, at www.nzgold.org that comment spoke volumes for the failure of many British people to understand the dynamic unfolding in the country they live in. Within this perhaps we enjoy an advantage – because there is a benefit to being geographically distant from Britain but visiting reasonably regularly. Distance affords a perspective that is difficult to obtain if one is 'to close to the action'.

Of course, gold is not useless! Gold is especially not useless if your legally mandated medium of exchange is Pound Sterling. Indeed, during not the lunacy – but in our view deliberate destruction – of the 'Brown years' gold has delivered impeccable 'financial insurance' for those prescient enough to have exchanged some Pounds for the yellow metal. Compared to 'The Brown Bottom' of 1999, when the then Chancellor of the Exchequer sold so much of Britain’s gold at an average price of £275 per ounce, the yellow metal has increased dramatically to £882 per ounce at the time of writing. Ironically, it reached an all time Sterling high just as Brown was being ignominiously forced from number 10 Downing Street in May 2010. Of course, the real story is not that gold has risen. Rather it is the fact that gold has exposed Pound Sterling’s ongoing, and accelerating, fall from the hallowed position it once enjoyed when it was “as good as gold”. The circumstances of national decline become even more remarkable when we consider, that during the past three decades, British governments have enjoyed around a trillion U.S. Dollars in North Sea Oil revenues. This, of course, during a period of flabbergasting increases in real taxation – irrespective of 'tinkering' with nominal income tax rates. Within this, we might reasonably expect to find the government's coffers groaning with plenty or, more correctly, groaning with plunder and ill-gotten gain. Yet no! With the national 'inheritance' squandered, and  the nation facing ruinous future levels of taxation, the English people and their United Kingdom compatriots can now look forward to the possibility of national bankruptcy.

Of course, getting into financial difficulties is not necessarily the end of the world. Many a person has wound up squandering the family fortune but has subsequently recovered - after the pleasures of wine, women, and song have given way to the demands of more austere circumstances. However, we think there are powerful – if controversial – explanations as to why Britain's post-war folly is going to prove difficult and perhaps impossible to fix. It was that unrivaled of Englishmen, King Alfred the Great, who reminded us:“in hardship a man often repairs what he long since did in the way of wickedness”. To us, the true wickedness imposed in the post-war period – and England has borne the brunt of this – has been the phenomenon of 'tactical mass immigration'. Combine this with the relentless accumulation of debt, that now arguably approaches a true figure of some five trillion Pounds, and we discern a problem of seismic proportions. Now, before any pious liberals condemn our 'racism' let us make an important point. At www.nzgold.org, we are essentially libertarians. Within this, the relatively laissez faire immigration policies that applied before the First World War tend to appeal. The late Dr Ferdinand Lips, whose seminal work: “Gold Wars – The Battle Against Sound Money As Seen From A Swiss Perspective” is indispensable reading, reminds us that under the gold-standard: "the world economy was operating on a full-potential basis and rising standards of living for the masses meant low or no unemployment". Compare and contrast with today where young English people are facing horrific levels of unemployment at the same time as immigration delivers demographic transformation on a scale unseen since the arrival of the Saxons.

So why is immigration such a disproportionate and increasingly ubiquitous source of concern to the English people today? After all, they can't all be “bigots” and, in some respects, messrs Blair, Brown and Cameron et al have simply returned us to ‘open-door’ policies of the past. At www.nzgold.org we would suggest it is because 'easy money' and other factors have facilitated levels of post-war immigration that were never economically justifiable, irrespective of issues concerning assimilation etc. Of course, during the profoundly destructive years of New Labour, it has now become clear that mass immigration was cynically seen as a 'tactical expedient' that could be deployed to permanently skew the nation's demographics. It is thus small wonder that their ideological bedfellows in the Conservative and Liberal Democrat ‘coalition’ have decided to end the national census. This suggests to us that the authorities are getting ‘twitchy’ about revealing the magnitude of demographic change now affecting England in particular. Moreover, it also suggests that nothing is going to be done about it beyond the standard palliatives about ‘toughening up’ the entry process. Indeed, as the ‘banksters’ reduce much of Southern Europe and the Republic of Ireland to penury we would expect migration flows into Britain to ‘skyrocket’ not to reduce.

Our readers need to understand a vital truth. None of this policy of ‘population replacement’ would have been possible without four things – relentless debt money issuance, exponentially rising real taxes, the royalties from North Sea oil and an 'indigenous' population rendered crapulent and undiscerning by such transient 'narcotics' as rising house prices and shameless consumerism. Thus, we discern a profound and ruinous difference between an ostensibly similar liberal past, which we strongly approve of, and the 'deliberate folly' of today, which we strongly disapprove of. Put simply, during the halcyon days to which the late Dr Lips referred, there was no such thing as 'welfare immigration' and the politicians running Britain were not mere 'vassals and whipping boys' of the European Union’s fascist ‘bankster’ elite. Hence, whilst people enjoyed great freedom of movement throughout Europe, they could not rely on someone else’s confiscated income, or debt money welfare issuance, to facilitate their life in a new country. Likewise, corporate interests could not avail themselves of an endless supply of cheap and malleable foreign labour whilst much of the cost thereof was cynically ‘socialized’. As Hayek reminded us in The Road to Serfdom, few people in 1944 could remember a genuinely capitalist system. So how much wiser is his observation today in that temple of corporate and ‘bankster’ cronyism known as Britain?

With various analyses suggesting some eighty percent of all jobs in Britain are now going to immigrants (and we must be careful of populist exaggerations in this regard) it does not take a professor of astrophysics to discern what is really going on. Such an arrangement simply facilitates a ménage a trois between the debt money issuers, the corporate elite, and government. The banker thus gets his sought after conditions of irredeemable debt-money enslavement, the businessman gets his quasi-subsidised workforce, and the politician gets his pretext for an authoritarian state as social tensions ultimately emerge. In a nutshell, we believe that mass immigration has been a key contributor to the erosion of real British prosperity and democracy during the post-war period. Yet, particularly in recent decades, unprecedented debt-money issuance - cynically deployed as ‘wealth’ - has served to disguise this. After all, who cares about the long-term future for a nation when house prices are advancing at double digits and you can buy that flash car with no money down? So what began as a group of West Indians ‘coming home’ on the ship Empire Windrush in 1948 has morphed, in our view, into a tactical expedient designed to turbo-charge the nation along Hayek’s  Road to Serfdom. The ruling elite will chant a relentless mantra about the benefits of mass 'economic' immigration. Yet a little analysis suggests their claims are actually garbage. So let us consider some common characteristics of those countries, especially the Anglo-Saxon ones, that have witnessed this phenomenon in the post war period:

  •  Massive and ultimately unsustainable deficits on the current account

  •  Chronic government deficits with flabbergasting levels of future unfunded liabilities.

  •  Large scale erosion of manufacturing bases and declines in intellectual capital.

  •  High levels of structural youth unemployment and even greater under-employment.

  •  Hugely damaging misallocation of resources to residential housing speculation.

  •  Chronic excessive money supply growth with associated erosion of real capital.

  •  Burgeoning culture of litigation and entitlement.

  •  The progressive erosion of civil liberties.

  •  The vilifying of anyone who questions any aspect of immigration policy as "fascist".

  •  The use of poorly paid migrants as a subsidized workforce for 'favoured interests'.

We do not believe that the above is the fault of immigrants per se. After all, which of us would not seek a better or more exciting life if the opportunity were offered and we struggle with the ridiculous idea that you can only be an Englishman/woman if you are white. In any event, much of the acute current resentment over immigration is arising from a flabbergasting influx of Eastern Europeans. Surely, condemnation should be reserved for the deliberate demographic engineering begat of politicians or, more correctly, of the power elites that command them. The fault lies in treating migrants as some form of commodity (and New Zealand has much to answer for in this regard) rather than recognizing their humanity. Indeed, whatever kind of nation uses migrants as a tactical expedient to deliberately inflate the price of residential housing?

We began writing this article before the British General Election, and now it is long past and a new government has been formed as discussed above. Already, many conservatives (with a small c) will be feeling conned - as they realise it is going to be 'corporate socialism as usual'. Mass demographic change will continue apace and it is to the 'middle class' that this fresh administration is coming, and will continue to come, for ruthless financial plunder. Is it not nauseating to see pampered, rich, Europhile, elitists inferring the confiscation of yet more of the incomes of those whose only failure was to embrace the values that lead to success!  Of course, in using the term "fresh" we are being sarcastic! For isn't the Cameron/Clegg coalition just more of the post-war same – another cast of tedious players to distract us as we traverse Hayek's long road to serfdom. Well, we have tried to warn our middle class readers in the past of what lays ahead especially in our article from 16th March 2008 entitled: "Are your assets at risk from the 'mob-ocracy'? - Why bullion is your bulwark"

We have emphasized to our readers - before it was fashionable to do so - of a middle class financially and socially crushed between the two converging pincers of a 'mob-ocracy'. Those 'pincers' comprise the unfolding nightmare of simply unbelievable levels of un-funded social welfare dependency and obscene bailouts for the likes of the bankers - who then have the cheek to lecture the rest of us on 'the free market'! If you are from the middle class be careful about your attitude to the current ‘clamp-downs’ on welfare. Be careful also about your attitude to recent student protests. The growing ‘write off’ of a generation of young British people will have huge implications going forward. Politics always involves ‘returns on violence deployed’ and, as the size of Britain’s wealth cake is shown to have been an illusion, the fight for what modest slices are available is likely to get very bitter. As we have argued before, in these circumstances the underclass will deploy muscle and the elite connections and power. The middle class will deploy stiff letters to the paper. So to whom do you think the remaining spoils will go? Will the government be able to hold the line in the event of social disorder? Will it actually wish to? Perhaps it will prefer to back down and meet its unaffordable liabilities via debt monetization. We suspect many of England’s smug ‘Guradian-reading liberal middle-class’ still think that they will get away with their increasingly crass ‘materialistic bubble’ – even if their children have to be sacrificed in the process. At www.nzgold.org we believe such attitudes are indicative of Enoch Powell’s infamous maxim: “those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad”.

At www.nzgold.org we are always examining the past. Not because we necessarily wish to live in it, but because as historians and logisticians we believe it offers guidance to what might lay ahead. Within this the conditions for the Celtic tribes, living in what is now England and Wales in the early part of the 1st century AD, sparks our interest. This is because we discern similarities within the political, social, and economic topography of that distant time and the current situation. Thus, our minds return to the observation of Mark Twain concerning history - and its tendency to “rhyme”. Insights offered by the Roman historian Tacitus, and other sources, suggest that a confluence of events was developing ahead of Queen Boudicca's Iceni uprising in AD60 that might be worth reflecting on today.

It is of course the stuff of legend, that the formidable Queen Boudica led her Iceni tribe (Norfolk & Suffolk) along with the Trinovantes (Essex) in an initially devastating assault against the Roman occupation. It would appear, after her husband had died, willing half his estate to Boudica and her daughters and half to Emperor Nero, 'Corporate Rome' sprang into action. The queen was flogged, and her daughters gang-raped for their audacity in believing that a proportion of their property might actually be theirs. If nothing else, their fate is a reminder that socialism, and the associated ideas of confiscation and thuggery on which it is reposed, did not start with morons like Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. No! It is a much older 'disease of morality'. Yet are we satisfied that this affront, terrible as it was, actually caused the Iceni uprising? Or was it simply the catalyst, the final straw that drove Celtic anger to boil over?

In attempting to address this matter, we were fortunate to chance across a copy of "Boudica" by Vanessa Collingridge (Elbury Press). This is a great read and a most worthwhile addition to the library. Combining the information therein, with other material, we were interested to discern an environment with - arguably - some rather alarming parallels to the situation of the English people today, namely:

      1)      Unsympathetic and alien 'corporate governance' from the European Mainland.

2)      Circumstances of deliberate 'debt enslavement' of the ‘indigenous’ population.

3)      Deliberate 'population replacement' with the long-established community forced to meet many of the costs associated with the new population - whilst being simultaneously displaced.

4)      Elimination of the country’s historic religion and its replacement with alternatives more suited to the ‘corporate state’.

Of course, in considering the likely plight of the English nation we must always have in our minds the astonishing capacity of her people for hypocrisy and snobbery. One of the things that has fascinated us over the years has been the readiness with which the liberal classes – in particular – are so ready to sneer at those of more modest means for their “racism” and “ignorance”. A cynic might suggest that part of the issue is the fact that many British liberals have not actually 'walked the walk' in terms of contemporary England and her challenges. Rather, they have stood aloof, talking about 'multiculturalism' and 'enrichment' whilst mysteriously avoiding many of the practical difficulties that are inevitably occurring in cities, towns, and now even rural areas. In a material comfort, substantially begat of debt money issuance and artificially inflated house prices, they forget the wise words of Alfred the Great – “that in prosperity a man often forgets himself”. The great issues for them have been whether the pesto is quite right or, perish the thought, confronting the absolute tragedy of finding a bottle of fine wine has become ‘corked’. This is magnificently demonstrated by a visit to London's Canary Wharf where a veritable Shangrii-La has been created for the favoured ‘money men’.

Canary Wharf - has British industry given way to usury?

Yet something that disturbs us is the prospect that many of England's liberals will begin to amend their ostensibly enlightened views if they start to feel personally threatened or disadvantaged by the dramatic and accelerating changes occurring within English society. In our new guide to gold “GOLDEN BULL” we refer to “highly illiberal liberal ideas” for we have always been suspicious that ‘when push comes to shove’ the Chardonay set's pious facade will prove to be just that – a facade! Remember, these people seem almost genetically programmed to sneer ‘little Englander’ or ‘racist’ even over things as innocent as someone choosing to fly a Cross of St. George or failing to condemn the British National Party with sufficient venom. Yet correct us. Aren’t these the same people content to vote for establishment politicians who have acquiesced in the fraudulent invasion of countries that posed no credible threat to Britain? Aren’t these the same people content to vote for establishment politicians who have acquiesced in the use of depleted uranium munitions? What is the potential lifespan of the radionuclides associated with such munitions? Aren’t these the same people who will continue to support the British political establishment – even if that elite ‘crosses the Rubicon’ and attacks Lybia or even Iran? Aren't these the same people who sneer at the doctrine of 'sound money' even as the albescence thereof 'immiserates' the poor and, increasingly, the middle class. Sorry, but at www.nzgold.org the shallow pieties of Britain’s tedious and hitherto pampered liberals do not impress us.

As regards Britain's political establishment we have little doubt that those, certainly in the higher echelons, know exactly what they are doing. As Franklin D. Roosevelt reminded us “In politics nothing happens by accident. If it happens you can bet it was planned that way”. Why would leaders pursue a course of action, that careful analysis suggests risks major tension? Is it too outrageous to suggest that the real objective is to create the conditions in which a pretext for imposing authoritarian rule emerges? So let us hope that the people in command are fools for, as the Roman legate Cicero reminded us: “a nation can survive its fools even the ambitious”. Yet he went on to remind us that a nation: “cannot survive its traitors”. So we must enquire. Has the unfettered embrace of debt money, the inexorable rise of taxes, the squandering of $US1,000,000,000,000 of North Sea Oil revenues, the inflation of house prices to ridiculous multiples of income, the squandering of young lives in unnecessary wars, and the imposition of overwhelming immigration been the work of fools? Or perhaps England is the victim of the selfishly ambitious? Or has it been the work of traitors? At www.nzgold.org we think the next few years will be critical. If England has merely been the victim of fools then perhaps there is a hope for a future where, irrespective of ethnicity, sufficient good people come together to deal rationally with the nation's immediate problems and its current trajectory towards impoverishment and fascism. In this regard the American economist Martin Armstrong has recently given us some cause for hope - with a suggestion that Britain may actually give the lead in rejecting Marxism. We sincerely hope so. Yet what if the traitor prevails? What if the indigenous population is deliberately provoked to a reaction unseen since those dark days of AD60. Could history repeat? Frankly we doubt it. Yet what if history rhymes?

Remember. The Roman authorities under Emperor Nero’s Governor Sutinous Paulinus were so out of touch with burgeoning Iceni and Trinovante resentment that it never occurred to them that an uprising could occur. Quite simply their arrogance and loathing took them too far – almost to the point of being thrown out! Fast forward almost two thousand years to the joke referred to as the latest British general Election. Almost all the subjects of real importance, to the lives of people, were placed off limits via the political elite's censorship. Thus what we discern are parties who ostensibly look different, but who essentially believe in the same things – the destruction of England, its neutering as an independent nation, and the debt enslavement of its population. Like the people of Greece, and now Ireland, and various other ruined European nations to come - and the Iceni and Trinovantes long before - the people of England face great hardship at the hands of the usurer going forward. During our slow progress with this article it has become clear that the nation’s debts are vastly greater than had previously been surmised. What was earlier mere reckless imprudence assumes more ominous portents as the previously unimaginable trillion pound public debt finally became reality in mid January. Worse still we have seen suggestions that Britain's total debt is approaching five trillion pounds. Filmmaker Martin Durkin, in his documentary "Britain's Trillion Pound Horror Story", addressed this scarcely believable situation in late 2010. How appropriate then to reflect on the wisdom of the Roman Historian Tacitus. For he reminds us that usury is the: “chief cause of rebellions amongst people”. We have already had a foretaste of social dislocation in Greece as that famous state begins its descent into the usurer’s dank abyss of irredeemable debt money enslavement. France is currently witnessing growing disorder. Other European nations look certain to follow suit with England’s students now rebelling, in our view courageously, against a future born of usury.  All were fed the same garbage by Europe’s ‘bankster’ elite – that debt plus mass immigration means prosperity. Sorry ‘Europhiles’ and ‘Chardonnay imbibers’ but it actually means impoverishment – for you - as well as the working class at whom you love to sneer. Moreover, if you are nominally debt free, do not even think for one minute that you have escaped the usurers cruel pinch. The probable associated destruction of Pound Sterling will hit you particularly hard as the purchasing power of your savings are decimated in favour of inflationary debt default.

As we consider this matter, we found it interesting that official recognition for Druidism as a religion has recently been extended in Britain. Interesting isn’t it. When a faith is down to a handful of adherents and poses no threat to the establishment those running Britain are happy to recognize it. How things change. For Druidism was, of course, the ancient faith of the peoples who occupied what is now England and Wales before the Roman conquest. Following the second invasion, and the permanent establishment of Roman administration, Tacitus reminds us of a problem with the Druids. Their ideas werefeeding the native resistance to the Roman corporate state. In consequence, extermination was required in order to expunge this impediment to Rome’s ideals. We would suggest that today Christianity fulfills a similar role. Not, we would suggest, via the Christianity of the clucking prelates who fall over themselves to worship at the footstall of John Maynard Keynes and Milton Friedman. They are already ‘in the socialist bag’. Not also via the Christianity of the extreme Zionists who can be relied upon to enthusiastically support every act of unjustified Anglo-American aggression. Rather, we would suggest via the faith so powerfully articulated in the life of King Alfred the Great. Alfred delivered a blending of spiritual and practical ideas that, importantly, gave foundation to our cherished English notions of well-defined property rights and democracy. Anathema to the concept of government ‘of bankers, by bankers, for bankers’ was his view that money is not everything. Good grief – whatever was the man thinking?

Put simply we suspect that genuine Christianity is no more compatible with the creation of a pure corporate pan-European state than Druidism was. At www.nzgold.org we believe this conclusion is irrefutable. The corporate state is the business of reducing humanity to pure ‘units of capital’ whereas religion is the business of elevating the mind to diverse but always higher plains. This is not to suggest that religion will not be used, where appropriate, to advance the state’s cause. Adolf Hitler, in his lamentation to Albert Speer, regretted the fact that Germany had been landed with Christianity rather than Islam. His analysis persuaded him that Islam would be more useful to the advance of German National Socialism than, as he put it: “meek and flabby Christianity”. Thus religion was o.k. provided it could be co-opted to advance the state’s aspirations. Many Christians today struggle to understand why their faith is under such attack when it gave repose to the sort of societies that we find in Britain, Europe, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. We would suggest it is precisely because the ruling elite have no intention of allowing those societies to continue as hitherto. In particular, there are our ideas on property rights. These are intimately bound up with Christianity via the law code of the man who effectively made the nation of England, King Alfred the Great. The Rev. Prof. Dr. F.N. Lee reminds us of Sir Winston Churchill's observation: "that the roots of King Alfred's Book of Laws or Dooms (alias his "Deemings") came forth from the (as then already long-established) laws of Kent, Mercia and Wessex. All these attempted to blend the Mosaic Code with the Christian principles of Celto-Brythonic Law and old Germanic customs". We would suggest that the property rights begat of Alfred are not compatible with a pure corporatized world where there will be no middle class – merely a super wealthy elite and ‘units of trans-national human capital’ doing their bidding.

Anyone conversant with Europe’s current circumstances will be aware of the burgeoning controversy over the continent’s alleged ‘Islamisation’. We are even treated to the spectacle of the so-called UAF (Unite Against Fascism) battling it out with the EDL (English Defense League) over this very issue. This is redolent of the social disorder of Weimar Germany where people of an essentially similar mindset, albeit with different emphasis, fought on the streets. Interestingly, we wonder how many members of the UAF are aware of Adolf Hitler’s views on Islam and its potential advantages over Christianity in the sustaining and extension of fascism. Perhaps we should remind them that the best defense against fascism is actually the gold standard - for the repose of sound and honest money is the cornerstone of a tolerant and free nation. It is always one of the great ironies that the ‘rent a mob’ types who twitter on about fascism actually provide the evidence that fascism is on its way. In what is likely to be an environment of growing social disorder the historian’s sensitive nostrils will discern the smell of Weimar and one can imagine the great Friedrich von Hayek recognizing the unfolding topography only too well – as England races along his “Road to Sefdom”.

So we conclude by reflecting, that had gold prevailed against the banker and his irredeemable debt money we would be unlikely to be asking if AD60 could happen again in England. Put simply the conditions of debt money enslavement and, moreover, debt money financed population replacement would not have been possible. These things happened in AD60 ‘England’ as a result of direct military occupation. Yet we are supposed to live today in an exemplar democracy and we have faced no serious threat of invasion since 1940. Indeed, so boastful are our leaders about our ‘democracy’ that they strut around the world trying to impose their deeply tarnished model on others. How sad that we could, instead, have been building on the foundation stones of liberty, prosperity, and peace, begat of the nineteenth century gold standard. At www.nzgold.org we do not think it was ever inevitable that a ‘perfect storm’ of disenfranchisement and hardship should confront large swathes of England. Rather, we might have ‘enjoyed’ a managed decline from our former position of pre-eminence. We could have taken careful heed of the prescient analysis of William Playfair in his 1805 masterpiece “An Enquiry into the Causes of the Permanent Decline of Powerful and Wealthy Nations". We could thus have "procrastinated" some of the inevitable decline that always follows greatness. If nothing else, England’s circumstances are a reminder of Playfair’s astuteness:

"From this almost universal picture, we learn that the greatness of nations is but of short duration. We learn, also, that the state of a fallen people is infinitely more wretched and miserable than that of those who have never risen from their original state of poverty. It is then well worth while to inquire into the causes of so terrible a reverse, that we may discover whether they are necessary, or only natural; and endeavour, if possible, to find the means by which prosperity may be lengthened out, and the period of humiliation procrastinated to a distant day".

Going forward much will depend on the degree of ‘scapegoating/vilifying’ of the English people and how far the ruling elite is willing to push them in order to provoke social disorder and the associated pretext for outright authoritarianism. Within this we believe there is cause for concern regarding the associated articles of the scandalously imposed Lisbon Treaty. Does this constitutional affront, this outrageous document, this expression of contempt for sovereign nation, facilitate the summary execution of European civilians in times of social disorder and war? Certainly this has been suggested and the cynic might reflect on the absolute desperation of Europe’s elite to get this treaty rammed through. Why? – the usual arrogance or perhaps an additional imperative? Could it be that they knew something Joe Public did not? Could it be that they foresaw the disorder unfolding in Europe and thus knew draconian provisions would be needed on the statute books – in order to maintain their power some time hence? Could we see the British government requesting the domicile of EU troops on English soil in order to ‘restore order’? Is such a possibility made more, or less, likely by the recent proposed cuts to the nation’s armed forces? Is this the real explanation for why Britain’s ruling elite is so keen to see Turkey, with its vast standing army, welcomed into the European Union? Do the comments from an unknown blogger, that accompany our picture of Queen Boudicca above, reflect the hysterical and irrational rantings of a 'little Englander'. Or do they show a measure of prescience that transcends the understanding of the average citizen? Do we not reflect, if only momentarily, that Imperial Rome was particularly adroit at domiciling troops from one part of the empire in order to maintain ‘order’ elsewhere? If Queen Boudica were here today what advice might she give us?

At www.nzgold.org we hope we are being unduly pessimistic in asking these questions but we did warn our readers back in October 2007 that “a crisis of Byzantine proportions” was coming in Europe: The suicide of Europe - must New Zealand follow suit? Mitigation will be increasingly challenging but gold continues to provide valuable financial insurance against the hyperinflationary and/or direct confiscatory events that may emerge in Britain as the country wrestles with its impecunious state. Our suspicion is that many of the coalition government's ‘austerity measures' will have to be abandoned. We have always argued that the horrific debt situation of western countries would eventually be resolved via hyperinflation not fiscal discipline - although it will be interesting to see what happens in Germany regarding this. Will they be content to carry on with the Euro in a currency ‘race to the bottom’? Or will the memory of the Weimar disaster prove too strong? Should another generation of decent, hard working Germans have their savings destroyed on the altar of a politically expedient and ultimately doomed fiat currency?

It took us most of the twentieth century to finally expunge the residual benefits of the classical gold standard, with millions slaughtered in the process and now many more awaking to the fact that debt money does not deliver prosperity but inescapable enslavement. There is a failure to understand that, as we have moved ever further from our capitalist and libertarian past, our ‘prosperity basis’ has been declining. Like the biblical ‘Prodigal Son’ we have effectively squandered our inheritance whilst deluding ourselves that we are so clever. Moreover, because of the huge post-war demographic changes that have been imposed across Europe, with virtually no public debate, we would suggest that societies are less well-equipped to cope with severe economic shock. Indeed, we return to our suspicion that one of the outcomes that the ruling elite have always sought from mass immigration is societal fracture - with the associated pretext for authoritarian rule.

Queen Boudica’s Iceni uprising in AD60 reminds us of what happens when authorities push people too far. Logic may suggest that opposition will be crushed, but circumstances for the ruling elite are probably a great deal more difficult in 2011 than they were almost two thousand years ago. Even then they were unable to prevent the destruction of Camulodunum (Colchester), Londinium (London), Verulamium (St. Albans) and an entire Roman legion. Only a tactical blunder by Boudicca saw Gaius Suetonius Paulinus recover the military situation - with appalling consequences for the Iceni and Trinovante rebels. Interestingly, the United Kingdom Independence Party’s MEP Nigel Farange spoke of the European Union’s ‘fear’ during a recent scathing denunciation. We think this was a prescient observation and well the EU might be afraid - for this fascist behemoth risks collapse and, as the saying goes, "there is nothing more dangerous than a wounded beast".

At www.nzgold.org we are not conspiracy theorists but logisticians and historians. We are also, dare we suggest, a little modest. Perhaps this is why we have been able to dissect the unfolding crisis with reasonable prescience thus far. Put simply, we do not share the conceited delusion of our liberal middle class fellows that – however many of the working class might be ‘sacrificed’ – we will always find a seat near the ‘top table’ of fractional reserve, multiculturalism, and political correctness. Put simply, we have understood that the ‘middle class’ have been living the ‘high-life’ on borrowed time and even more borrowed money. Now fear is a dangerous thing. We think it is an especially dangerous thing when it starts to affect Europe’s ruling elite. Europe has always been a place of megalomaniacs. The fact that those in charge today know, intimately, their fine wines and Italian suits does not persuade us that they are essentially any different to likes of Emperor Nero. If ‘push comes to shove’ in order to retain their power we suspect there will be a great deal more violence than most Europeans suspect. Remember, especially in Britain, we are lectured ‘ad nauseum’ on the ‘universality of man’. Well look ‘dear English liberal’ at what you beloved ruling ‘coterie’ of Labour, Conservative, & Liberal Democrat has done to the people of Iraq and those elsewhere. “Welcome to their world” - where to criticize, or argue with, a Muslim in Britain or Europe is to risk prosecution for a ‘hate crime’. Yet, when it suits the establishment, they will casually invade that Muslim’s country and festoon his topography with depleted uranium munitions. Not a ‘hate crime’ you will understand – simply the spreading of democracy and the protecting of us from ‘terror’. Are you persuaded that the same deployment of violence will not be used upon you some time hence?

In our view England's liberal elite would do well to remember that there had almost certainly been previously close relations between Queen Boudica, her husband King Prastagus, and the Roman colonial authorities. Perhaps they satisfied themselves in the belief that their position was inviolate - comfortable with the elitism that Julius Caesar had noted during his invasion over a century earlier: "there are only two classes of men who are of any importance. For the common people are regarded almost as slaves...Most of them, crushed by debt or heavy taxes or the oppression of more powerful men pledge themselves to the service of nobles, who exercise over them the same rights as masters have over slaves. The two privileged classes are the Druids and the Knights". Well, most of the Celtic Druids and the Knights - the 'elite' - ultimately wound up being exterminated along with the 'riff-raff'. How does the old maxim go - "pride comes before a fall"?

So we conclude by hoping that history does not rhyme - much less repeat. Let's be honest, we watch with smug satisfaction as places like Egypt and Libya descend into chaos thinking that such events could never happen on our more sophisticated turf. At www.nzgold.org we are not so sure. The precedent already exists for bloody rebellion on English soil. Vanessa Collingridge, who really brings the account of Boudica's uprising so fully to life, offers a terrifying assessment of what befell the previous inviolate and arrogant Romans as they took refuge in the Temple of Claudius at Camulodunum. "As the Romans huddled inside the temple with only the flickering of their lamps, they would first have heard the screams of Boudica's army outside, then the thunder of missiles on the doors and walls and then the sounds of the walls being scaled and the roof tiles being removed to gain access to the huddled masses below. One can only begin to imagine the mounting horror of those inside as they realised that no help was going to arrive".

One of the great twentieth century students of English and European history was, ironically, the parliamentarian Enoch Powell - the arch opponent of the European Union. In a speech to The London Rotary Club in Eastbourne in November 1968 he offered this warning to those who misinterpret English passivity in the face of danger, absurdity, and provocation. We can do no better that to borrow Mr Powell's prescient words to conclude this article:

"The English as a nation have their own peculiar faults. One of them is that strange passivity in the face of danger or absurdity or provocation, which has more than once in our history lured observers into false conclusions – conclusions sometimes fatal to the observers themselves – about the underlying intentions and the true determination of our people".
